Tiny PC

Article by Darren Beckett

Truly amazing little gadget, actually I’m not quite sure if that’s the word to address it but it really is amazing. Personal Computer in a USB Stick! Originally, Raspberry PI Foundation designed this little monster for British schools, for children that cannot afford fancy laptops. But really, think about it, all the enthusiasts and geeks from all over the world will go crazy about this gadget. before we talk about technical details of Tiny PC by Raspberry PI Foundation let me shock you one more time; it’s one thing they managed to actually fit in to this little thing Functional CPU with 700 MHz and 128MB internal memory but really, HDMI? How cool is that? It’s not like you can run 1080p Blu-Ray rips on this thing but still, but it is something worth bragging about.

So what do we have inside?

700 MHZ processor ARM 11

128 MB SD RAM (Internal Memory)

1080p30 H.264 High Profile Decode

USB 2.0 Connectivity

SD/MMC/SDIO card slots

OpenGL ES 2.0

General purpose I/O

OS Ubuntu, Iceweasel, KOffice, Pylathon

HDMI

1080p H.264 High Profile Decode is slightly confusing though, there is no way 700 MHz Processor of ANY KIND can ever support 1080p Video Playback. And even if it could, Internal Memory of this Gadget is nowhere near enough to store such huge a media file, even 1 minute of 1080p Video is larger than 128 MB. But hey, don’t forget that device has USB port (even if it’s only 1 USB port); which means, in theory you could hook one side of the gadget to the External Data Storage Device and the other side to HDMI (HDTV, Monitor).

Like I said before, Raspberry PI Foundation Tiny PC has a single USB port which means you could hook it up with a keyboard and use Facebook, Twitter and such applications. But in theory nothing is stopping you to use a USB HUB, this would allow you to connect more gadgets to your PC such as Mice, printer, scanner, cameras, everything with USB Connectivity.

Price for the device is (10-15 Pounds in UK). This means Tiny PC Gadget will be cheap for any child to own in the school. But something tells me this device is going to be way more popular for the PC Enthusiasts and Geeks all over the world. Some may even try to overclock it:)
