What’s the Best GPS With Text to Speech?
Article by Rick Cole
What’s the best GPS with text to speech? If you’re looking for a GPS, I’m sure you’ve heard of this phrase. Just in case, though, let’s get clear on what this actually means. It means that your GPS actually tells you the names of the streets you’re to turn on.
As an example, a GPS without text to speech would just say, “turn right”. Whereas a GPS with this capability would say something like, “Turn right on Elm Street.”
I’m sure you can see how useful this can be when you’re in unfamiliar territory!
Used to be that text to speech was a feature that most GPS devices didn’t have. Now, most GPS devices come with it, so the question really is which device is the best GPS with this feature?
That’s a little hard to answer, because most GPS devices that come with text to speech also come with other features. Virtually all of the Garmin nuvi series, for instance, have the ability to say street names. Only the Nuvi 205 and 205W don’t have it. Does that mean that Garmin’s GPS’s are the best GPS with text to speech? Maybe. It really depends a lot on what other features come with the device.
Not every manufacturer has included the ability to say street names with their devices, however. There are several Magellans, which can’t do this. I don’t know if this disqualifies a Magellan from being the best GPS with text to speech, but it’s definitely something to think about when you buy one.
Right now, most of the Magellan Maestro 4000 series have text to speech, few of the Maestro 3000 series does, and most of the RoadMate series does. If you buy a Magellan, then just be aware of this if this is really what you want.
Really, if you get right down to it, which unit is the best GPS with text to speech is not the deal anymore. It’s more like which units have Bluetooth and which have multi-point routing. In other words, the more advanced features are where it’s at right now. So, maybe the question should be which units have the best Bluetooth, or the best multi-point routing. Not which has the best GPS with text to speech.
